While the original Dragon Ball anime followed Goku through childhood into adulthood, Dragon Ball Z is a continuation of his adulthood life, but at the same time parallels the maturation of his son Gohan, as well as the secondary protagonist Vegeta (who would go on to become a protagonistic anti-hero). Unlike the first two series that he directed, Toriyama often found himself being unable to make weekly deadlines due to having become a family man, stating: "I am doing my best to keep my work up to a set schedule regardless of whether I feel ill or not".

Coming off of the huge success of Dragon Ball, Toei Animation quickly released Dragon Ball Z (DBZ) to capitalize on its predecessor's explosive popularity.  picks up in Medias Res, with Goku as an adult, and his son Gohan, introduced at the end of the previous series. A little more than a year has passed since the 23rd World Martial Arts Tournament, and the story focuses around the threat of an imminent Saiyan invasion. Goku, Earth's greatest hero, is dead--but his death was only in vain. In fact, it has brought new threats to Earth--from outer space this time! The Saiyans, as they are called, are a powerful warrior race that once lived on a planet called Vegeta...until it was destroyed by their leader Frieza while they were out conquering other worlds. Goku is the last surviving Saiyan from Earth and he has been training his young son Gohan to harness his deep hidden powers in anticipation of these new threats. Meanwhile two surviving Saiyans named Vegeta and Nappa arrive on Earth in giant spaceships with the intention of taking over and destroying it for revenge against their archenemy Frieza for destroying their home planet.
